Drive rivets are fasteners that can be identified by a short mandrel that protrudes from the head. This mandrel provides a key function in the drive rivet’s installation. When driven with a hammer, the inserted end of the rivet flares out and serves to secure the rivet in place. A backing block, made from steel or another dense material, is also placed behind the rivet as it’s hammered. These rivets have less of a clamping force compared to other rivets.
Drive rivets are most commonly used to secure wood panels. Since these rivets do not require installation holes to be drilled completely through the panel, they contribute to a flush, aesthetically pleasing appearance. In addition to wood structures, drive rivets can be used in plastic, metal, and other materials. Apart from a hammer and backing block, these rivets do not require any special setting tools or equipment.
